Key takeaways
A professionally built UK Shopify store costs £3,000–£25,000 to launch.
Running costs are typically £350–£700 per month at £10k monthly revenue.
Using an external gateway instead of Shopify Payments adds up to 2% per order on Basic.
Most small UK brands are best served by a designer-configured premium theme, not a bespoke build.
Short answer: a professionally built Shopify store in the UK costs between £3,000 and £25,000 to launch, plus roughly £75 to £400 per month to run once you include the Shopify plan, apps and transaction fees. Larger catalogues, custom checkout logic or Shopify Plus push that well past £40,000.
This guide separates the two costs founders usually blur together: the one-off build and the ongoing running cost. Both matter, and the second one is what quietly eats margin.
The two costs of a Shopify store
- 1Build cost — design, theme setup or custom development, product upload, integrations and launch.
- 2Running cost — Shopify subscription, payment fees, apps, domain, email, and maintenance.
A cheap build with ten paid apps bolted on is usually more expensive over three years than a well-built store with three.
Shopify plan pricing in the UK
| Plan | Monthly (annual billing) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | ~£19 | First store, low order volume |
| Grow | ~£49 | Growing stores, multiple staff |
| Advanced | ~£259 | Higher volume, advanced reporting |
| Plus | From ~£2,000 | High-volume and multi-store brands |
Prices move periodically, so check Shopify's current UK pricing before you budget. Annual billing is normally around 25% cheaper than monthly.
Transaction and payment fees
Shopify Payments in the UK charges roughly 1.7% + 25p per domestic card transaction on Basic, dropping on higher plans. Use an external gateway such as PayPal or Stripe instead and Shopify adds an extra platform fee of up to 2% on Basic — that is the single most commonly missed cost in ecommerce budgets.
On £10,000 monthly revenue with an average £45 order, you are looking at roughly £220 to £280 per month in card fees alone.
Build cost by approach
| Approach | Cost | Timeline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY on a free theme | £0 – £500 | 1 – 3 weeks | Testing an idea, tiny catalogue |
| Premium theme, self-configured | £200 – £900 | 2 – 4 weeks | Budget launches |
| Designer-configured premium theme | £3,000 – £7,000 | 3 – 5 weeks | Most small UK brands |
| Custom-designed Shopify build | £8,000 – £25,000 | 6 – 12 weeks | Brands with a distinct identity |
| Headless / Shopify Plus build | £30,000 – £120,000 | 12 – 26 weeks | High-volume, complex ops |
A designer-configured premium theme is where most UK small businesses should start. You get a considered brand, a converting layout and clean product architecture without paying for bespoke front-end engineering you do not yet need.
What drives the build price up
- Product count and variants. 20 products is an afternoon; 2,000 with size, colour and metafields is a data project.
- Custom product configurators. Personalised, made-to-order or bundle products need real development.
- Subscriptions. Recurring orders add an app, billing edge cases and customer portal work.
- Integrations. ERP, accounting, 3PL, EPOS and CRM syncs each add days, not hours.
- Migration. Moving from WooCommerce, Squarespace or Wix means a redirect map, product export and SEO protection. See my guide on migrating from Squarespace to Shopify.
- B2B / wholesale. Customer-specific pricing, net terms and gated catalogues sit at the top of the range.
Typical monthly running costs
| Item | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Shopify plan | £19 – £259 |
| Apps (reviews, email, upsells, shipping) | £0 – £150 |
| Email marketing (Klaviyo tier) | £0 – £120 |
| Domain | ~£1 |
| Maintenance and support | £70 – £300 |
| Card processing (on £10k revenue) | £220 – £280 |
Realistic total for a small UK store doing £10k/month: £350 to £700 per month all in, before advertising.
Where to save money sensibly
- Buy one good theme, not five apps. Every app is a monthly fee and a page-speed cost.
- Sort your product data before design starts. Photography, descriptions and variant structure are usually the delay, not development.
- Skip the custom build until you have traction. A converting theme build at £5,000 that funds itself beats a £20,000 bespoke store you cannot yet justify.
- Consolidate email and reviews. One tool doing three jobs beats three tools doing one.
- Get shipping and tax right at launch. Retrofitting UK/EU VAT and delivery rules is far more expensive than configuring it once.
If a quote is under £1,500 for a "full custom Shopify store", it is a theme install with your logo dropped in. That is fine — but pay theme-install prices for it.
Shopify vs Wix for UK ecommerce
Shopify is the stronger choice once you are shipping physical products at volume, need multi-channel selling or want serious inventory control. Wix suits smaller catalogues where the site is mostly brochure with a shop attached. I cover the trade-offs in Wix vs Shopify for UK businesses.
What I charge
I build Shopify stores for UK brands from Windsor as a Wix Partner Legend and Shopify developer. Theme-based brand builds start around £3,000; custom-designed stores typically land between £8,000 and £20,000, fixed-scope and fixed-price with a written specification first. Full breakdown on my pricing page and Shopify service page.
Final thoughts
The stores that make money are rarely the most expensive ones. They are the ones with clean product data, a fast storefront, an honest delivery promise and a checkout nobody has to think about.
