SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) sounds intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. As a web designer who builds SEO into every site, here's my no-nonsense guide for UK small business owners.
What is SEO, Really?
SEO is simply making your website easy for Google to understand, so it shows your site when people search for what you offer. That's it.
The 5 Things That Actually Matter
1. Google Business Profile
If you do nothing else, set up and optimise your Google Business Profile. It's free, and it's the single most effective thing for local businesses.
What to do:
- Claim your profile at business.google.com
- Add photos (businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests)
- Get reviews (aim for 10+ with 4.5+ stars)
- Post updates weekly
- Add your services and products
2. Your Website Content
Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it. Make sure your website clearly states:
- What services you offer
- Where you're based / where you serve
- Why someone should choose you
Write naturally — don't stuff keywords. If you're a plumber in Reading, write "I'm a plumber based in Reading, Berkshire" somewhere on your homepage. Done.
3. Page Titles & Meta Descriptions
Every page needs a unique title (under 60 characters) and description (under 160 characters). These are what show up in Google search results.
Example:
- Title: "Wedding Florist Windsor | Beautiful Bouquets & Arrangements"
- Description: "Award-winning wedding florist in Windsor, Berkshire. Stunning bouquets, table arrangements, and ceremony flowers. Free consultation."
4. Mobile-Friendly Website
Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily looks at the mobile version of your site. If your site looks bad on phones, your rankings suffer.
5. Page Speed
Slow websites rank lower. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to check your site. Key fixes:
- Compress images (use WebP format)
- Minimise unnecessary scripts
- Choose a fast hosting provider

When to Hire a Professional
If you're too busy to handle SEO yourself, a web designer who understands SEO (like me!) can build it into your website from day one. This is much more cost-effective than hiring an SEO agency after the fact.
