There are over a thousand web design companies listed on Clutch and DesignRush for London alone. Everyone has a slick reel, a Shoreditch postcode and a homepage that claims they're "award-winning". So how do you actually pick one?
After ten years building websites for London businesses — from Mayfair clinics to Hackney startups — here's the buyer's guide I wish more clients had before they started getting quotes.
1. Get clear on what you actually need before you talk to anyone
Most bad agency relationships start because the client didn't define the brief. Before you book a single discovery call, write down:
- The single most important thing the site needs to do (book, sell, generate leads, raise money)
- Who it's for (be specific — "founders of pre-seed B2B SaaS" not "businesses")
- Three sites you love and three you hate, with reasons
- A real budget range (not "as cheap as possible")
- A real deadline (not "ASAP")

2. Match the agency to your stage, not their reputation
A 40-person agency in Soho is the wrong choice for a £15k brochure site, and a one-person freelancer is the wrong choice for a £150k enterprise platform. The London market splits roughly into:
- **Solo studios & boutique agencies (1–5 people)** — best for £8k–£40k projects, founder-led businesses, fast turnarounds, hands-on relationships.
- **Mid-sized independents (10–30 people)** — best for £40k–£150k, scaling brands, multi-channel design, dedicated PMs.
- **Network agencies (50+ people)** — best for £150k+, enterprise procurement, multi-market rollouts, complex governance.
Pick the size that matches your project — not the most famous one you can afford.
3. Look at outcomes, not just visuals
A reel of pretty homepages tells you nothing about whether the site converts. In every pitch, ask:
- "What did the client's conversion rate / sales / leads look like before and after?"
- "What does the analytics report 12 months in look like?"
- "Can I speak to a past client who launched 2+ years ago?"
Agencies that only show launch screenshots are selling design. Agencies that show traffic graphs and revenue numbers are selling business outcomes. You want the second one.
4. Interrogate the process, not the deliverables
Every agency lists "discovery, design, build, launch". Useless. What you actually want to know:
- Who is on your project day-to-day, and what's their hourly rate?
- How many revision rounds are included before scope-creep fees kick in?
- What happens if the project overruns — who eats the cost?
- How are decisions logged and signed off?
- What's the handover and warranty period after launch?
A good London agency will answer all five without flinching. A bad one will say "we're flexible" — which means "we'll figure it out and bill you for it".
5. Check what's under the hood
The London market is full of agencies that design beautifully in Figma and then hand off to overseas developers with no quality control. Ask:
- What platform/stack will the site be built on, and why that one?
- Do you build in-house or outsource development?
- Will I own the code and design files at the end?
- What's the page-speed and accessibility commitment? (Anything under 90 on mobile Lighthouse is not 2026-standard.)
For most London SMEs, [Wix Studio](/services/wix), Shopify, or a [custom React build](/services/custom) is the right answer — not a bespoke PHP monstrosity that locks you in for life.
6. Pricing transparency is a tell
The best London agencies will give you a band on the first call ("this kind of project tends to run £25k–£40k") and a fixed quote within a week. The ones that take three weeks to send a vague proposal are either disorganised or trying to read your wallet. Both are red flags.

7. The chemistry test
You'll spend 3–6 months with these people. On the discovery call, ask yourself:
- Did they ask better questions than I did?
- Do they push back when I'm wrong, or just agree?
- Would I want them at the company offsite?
If the answer to any of those is no, keep looking. London has plenty of options.

Hire small for small projects. Hire for outcomes, not awards. Demand process transparency. Own your code. Trust your gut on chemistry.
